Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart. I followed the steps mentioned by you but 'Headphone' is not listed under playback devices in the playback tab even when i click on show disabled devices. That is normal. You are not supposed to have to select "headphones" every time you want to listen to headphones. If you have re-installed your audio driver and the problem remains then it is a hardware problem, except there is one configuration that can shut down audio to the headphones.
That is when Headphones are selected to be the default Communication device. If you see anything like that on the Playback tab you should disable it. Check the Audio Jacks, Speakers and audio cables for damage. Test the audio output port through a known good head phones or external speakers. That means the jack is working and device is detected when i insert earphone but i am getting no sound. I would like to know why is the headphone disappear from the list? I was able to use the head phone for window 8?
Now i am curious why? Do you mean the list of playback devices on the Playback tab of the Sound properties? What appears in the list depends to an extent on the audio driver.
If you are using a different driver now than the one you had before, that could be the reason that the list is different. Unless you have a usb headphones, normally you will only see "Speakers". Open the Playback tab of the Sound properties and right click on the blank white area.
Select to show disconnected devices and disabled devices. If there is still no Headphones that means that the driver uses "Speakers" for both headphones and speakers. You could also try the native Windows audio driver. Some versions of it show Headphones as a separate device. Browse Community. Ask a question. Quick access.

I'm trying to assist someone for work who claims that she used to hear an email notification sound through the speakers inside her tower like a system beep when she received an email. She uses headphones a lot because she has to listen to recordings for her work.
The email sound comes through her headphones but if she's not wearing them she can't hear the sound. When I turned my volume up, I noticed that sound was coming out of my speakers while the headphones were still plugged in.
No notifications pop up when I plug in and remove my headphones like they used to, and they don't show up under playback devices, even when "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices" are checked. My headphones work when I plug them into anything else, and were working fine on my laptop earlier in the day. Trying other working headphones on my laptop gives me the same problem.
I have been trying to fix this for two days. This is very weird, and came out of the blue. I did not drop my laptop or anything before this happened; it was simply sitting on my bed. Could someone please give me some suggestions of what I could do to solve this?
Open the Device Manager find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt. Select to "Update Driver Software". Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".
Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer". Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" the native driver.
Click "Next". On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" install the driver. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart. If it works with the native driver but not the Realtek then there is a problem with the Realtek driver. The Realtek 6. The older version works okay though -- 6.
Thank you for your reply. Sorry for getting back to you late, I haven't been on my laptop much since I have been having problems, and I forgot to check my post until now. I followed your steps, but the problem still persists; sound plays out of my speakers and not my headphones when they are plugged in.
